One of Premier’s fortes is consulting on wellness programs for employees. As part of our commitment to wellness, Premier has been conducting wellness challenges for our own staff. We have had several successful challenges so far. Those who met a challenge each week earned raffle tickets, and were entered into a drawing for a gift card reward each month.
Challenges have included:
- Strive for Five – participants were challenged to eat at least 4 fruits/vegetables per day. The more healthy options we chose, the more tickets we earned.
- Keep Moving – everyone was encouraged to engage in at least 30 minutes of exercise several days a week. The more days of exercise, the more tickets earned.
- Fall Back Into Good Habits – this challenge combined goals for sleep, physical activity and eating fruits/vegetables.
Media stories often suggest that the average person gains 7 to 10 pounds over the holidays, beginning with Thanksgiving. And in surveys, people say they gain, on average, about five pounds this time of year. Several studies now show that the average weight gain during the winter holidays is just one pound. But those pounds add up, and holiday partying can lead to a continuation of indulgent eating habits.
So, in December, Premier employees will participate in a new challenge – “Maintain, Don’t Gain.” This is meant to encourage healthy behaviors during a month of office parties, entertaining, and holidays. The goal is to not add that extra holiday weight as we move into a new year.
As a consultant for self-funded health plans, one of Premier’s goals is to encourage healthy employee behaviors. The healthier your employees, the healthier your bottom line. We are excited to put our own advice into practice!
